This illustration is the backdrop for a small piece of altered art jewelry. Imagine a colorful pendant in the blank rectangle and the image will be complete.
"The artist, if he is not to forgotten how to listen, must retain the vision which includes angels and dragons and unicorns, and all the lovely creatures which our world would put in a box marked Children Only! ~ Madeleine L'Engle
When I started working on this piece I was trying to create a Utopia to partner with "Outopia". The unhappy truth is it bored me and I ran out of motivation to finish. (My pen tip also brokeso I'm waiting on it's replacement). Maybe that has some disturbing psychological implications or maybe perfection is dull. In any case, I put a lot of time into the drawing and I thought I'd let it see the light of day.
I was looking through some of my old sketch books this afternoon and found a note I had written. I'm sure it is a quotation from someone else, but as I read it this image came to mind.
Sometimes we give comfort and receive comfort at the same moment...
In an effort to live more dangerously I broke with the safety of black ink and experimented with brown ink. Some of the challenges (a.k.a mistakes) presented themselves after I was well into building the nest. In a perfect world I'd spend the time to do her again. But this is a piece about mending so I'll leave her in her challenged state for now.
In spite of her flaws I like this little drawing. I had a delicate thread that connected each bird but the "challenges" erased the connection.
I'm an artist living in Northern Maine, the really cold part. The long winters give me plenty of time to draw and paint.
For several years, I worked as a portrait artist in Seattle. I've posted a few of my portraits from past years. I miss painting portraits, and I'm eager to start my business again. I'll be posting new work soon.
The drawings on "Larabird Art" are not meant to be commerical work. I do them for the sake of doing them. They are the expression of my life and thoughts from week to week. They get a little darker as the temperature drops.
I also tried my hand at illustration which I've listed on a seperate blog.
Thanks for visiting,
